climbing
climbing:
I've been climbing since around age 4. Yes, I'm serious. My mother had figured out that kids are on
a mission to kill or maim themselves and decided it was best for me to know how to climb before I started
climbing things on my own. Placing me three feet up a young apple tree sounds pretty tame, but it's pretty
intense for a little kid, and it was up to me to figure out how to get down. It wasn't long before I was
asking for help getting back into the tree, and climbing up higher.
I've had a passion for climbing ever since, as well as a (possibly unhealthy) complete lack of fear of
heights. It's not that I don't respect it, I just don't get rattled by things that most "normal people"
would NOPE right out of.
She followed up several years later gifting me my first climbing harness (which definitely doesn't fit
anymore!) as well as a pair of ascenders that I still use frequently. I relied on "hardware store rope"
for quite a few years before I could afford to buy my own serious climbing rope and accessories, but at
this point I'm using only safe, professional-grade equipment. Maybe one of these days I'll get some
professional training, or put my skills to work for income. But for now it's just a hobby. I climb for
the enjoyment, mostly on towers. Usually for free, but it's not uncommon to get offered compensation
or at least a meal for my work. I consider it a win for everyone.
